The Most Beautiful Gift: A Family’s First Tree in Years
“Knowing that someone took the time to prepare something for us was the most wonderful thing that has happened to us”
When Elena and Daniel came to Canada from Mexico, they were building a new life far from the family and familiar traditions they had known back home. Now raising their young daughter, Lucia, they were looking forward to celebrating another Christmas together, but with Daniel’s construction work becoming less reliable during the winter months and Elena staying home with Lucia, the family had little extra room in their budget for the holidays.
For Elena, Christmas has always been about creating special memories with family. This year, a Holiday Helpers sponsorship gave their family the opportunity to do just that.
A Tree That Made Christmas Feel Like Home
After nearly three years in Canada, Elena and Daniel had not had their own Christmas tree for some time. So when their Holiday Helpers package arrived, one gift stood out immediately.
“The Christmas tree was the most beautiful thing,” Elena shared. “This year was special for us because it had been a while since we’d put up our own tree.”
The family even decided to wait until Christmas Day to open their gifts, making the moment feel even more special. When Christmas morning finally arrived, Elena, Daniel and Lucia opened their presents one by one and celebrated together.
For their toddler, it was a day filled with new discoveries and plenty of excitement.
“My baby enjoyed it immensely too, and we are grateful for all the lovely things you gave her,” Elena said.
More Than Gifts
For a family of newcomers building a life on their own in Canada, the support meant much more than having presents under the tree. It reminded Elena and Daniel that there were people in their new community who cared about their family and wanted to help make their Christmas special.
“We are a family of immigrants living alone in this country,” Elena shared. “Knowing that someone took the time to prepare something for us was the most wonderful thing that has happened to us.”
The experience also gave the family something they could share together: a Christmas filled with traditions, laughter and memories that Lucia could grow up remembering.

A Little Christmas Magic
As Elena looks ahead, she hopes to continue building a future for her family in Canada. For now, she is focused on caring for Lucia, with plans to take ESL classes once her daughter is old enough to attend daycare. Daniel continues working in construction, doing his best to provide for their family despite the uncertainty that comes with seasonal work.
This Christmas, a Holiday Helpers donor helped take some of that uncertainty away and gave Elena, Daniel and Lucia a chance to simply enjoy being together.
“Thank you all for including us and being part of this program that undoubtedly brings joy to many families like ours,” Elena wrote.
Their Christmas Day became a celebration they will remember, not only because of the gifts they received, but because of the kindness behind them.
