How Holiday Helpers and Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter Are Helping Families Rebuild Hope This Holiday Season

The holiday season can be an emotional and difficult time for many families, especially for women and children rebuilding their lives after experiencing domestic violence. At Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter, staff members like Monica and Madison see every day how much care and compassion can mean to those starting over.

For years, Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter has partnered with Holiday Helpers, connecting families in need with the warmth and generosity of our community. The organization provides shelter, safety, and support services to women and children fleeing abuse, helping them rebuild their confidence and independence. Some arrive at the shelter with nothing but the clothes on their backs, while others are just beginning their next chapter in a new home.

“The Holiday Helpers program makes such an incredible difference for these families,” says Madison.

Monica adds, “We have families that come to the shelter after leaving everything behind. Receiving Holiday Helpers support during the holidays — which can already be such a stressful time — makes a huge difference and puts a spark on their faces.”

For many women, the holidays can stir a mix of emotions. “At the end of the day, they are walking into the unknown and not expecting anything huge or surprising, like receiving gifts from an anonymous donor,” Monica explains. “It goes a long way to show them there are still good people in the world.”

Through Holiday Helpers’ family sponsorship program, families supported by Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter experience not only the joy of receiving gifts but also the deeper comfort of community and kindness. Each sponsored family is reminded that they are not alone — that compassion can light even the darkest seasons.
