Kasheka’s Story: Finding Hope Through Holiday Helpers
Last Christmas was especially meaningful for Kasheka, who was expecting a baby while caring for her two young daughters. Earlier in the year, life had taken a difficult turn. After losing their apartment, Kasheka and her girls spent months searching for a new place to live, bouncing between temporary arrangements and uncertainty. Just weeks before the holidays, they finally found a home of their own. It was a relief—but also the start of new challenges.
Money was tight, work had slowed, and with a baby on the way, every dollar had to stretch a little further. Christmas, she thought, would have to wait until next year.
Kasheka remembers breaking the news gently to her daughter that they wouldn’t be putting up the Christmas tree. “I said it was because I was tired,” she shared, “but really, it was because I didn’t have anything to put under it.”
Then, just a week before Christmas, everything changed. Holiday Helpers called to let her know that her family’s gifts were ready for delivery. When volunteers arrived at her door, she watched in disbelief as they carried in box after box of beautifully wrapped presents. “They just kept coming in with boxes after boxes,” she recalled with a smile.
For Kasheka, it was more than just gifts. “In the midst of this storm, there was a rainbow,” she said. After months of hardship, the kindness she received brought a sense of hope she hadn’t felt in a long time. Every part of the experience, from the thoughtful wrapping to the care shown by volunteers, made her feel seen and respected. “They treated me like a person, not a victim,” she said.
When asked to describe Holiday Helpers, Kasheka didn’t hesitate: “Extraordinary.”
